Wiltshire

Wiltshire is one of the UK’s 10 fastest growing counties, with 84,000 new homes built between 1978 and 2003.

The latest target is for 60,000 new homes between 1996 and 2016. But there are constraints with 70% of the countryside protected from large-scale development, and a large part of the county owned by the Ministry of Defence.

New development is concentrated in Swindon, Salisbury, Trowbridge and Chippenham, but Swindon is on target to provide nearly half of the county’s new housing by 2016.

Swindon has major development areas to the north and south of the town, both of which involve Sovereign Development Consortium.

In the northern development area, Sovereign has completed new homes at Priory Vale, and is preferred partner to work with Taylor Wimpey on the 4500-home southern development area called Witchelstowe, close to Junction 16 of the M4.

In neighbouring North Wiltshire, notable projects include the redevelopment of Chippenham’s cattle market into 265 homes (working with Linden Homes), and a sensitive rural scheme of five houses in the village of Minety.
